Did you know that you really don’t have to “run” at parkrun? Walkers are not only valued but are actually encouraged … and “parkwalking” is promoted every October.
“Walkers are welcome every week at parkrun but we especially encourage walkers each October to emphasise that while it is called ‘parkrun’, running isn’t necessary,” Wondai parkrun event director Ros Heit said.
“Every week we have regular groups of walkers.
“A volunteer ‘parkwalker’ wears a blue vest and their job is to walk and talk at whatever pace you would like.”
Ros said there would be a smiling volunteer in a blue vest to walk with you and keep you company at the Wondai parkrun, Ros Gregor parkrun at Nanango, Brisbane Valley Rail Trail parkrun at Blackbutt and the Railway Park parkrun at Proston.
parkrun founder Paul Sinton-Hewitt is actually proud that the parkrun finishing time has become slower because it means it’s attracting a wider range of people for whom physical activity was not the norm, including walkers and people facing various barriers to participation.
All Queensland parkruns start at 7:00am every Saturday.
- Registration to take part in any parkrun event is free and can be done online
