Two truck drivers were killed in a horrifying head-on collision and fire on the D’Aguilar Highway at Nukku on Thursday morning.

Emergency services were called to the incident, not far from the Nukku Road intersection, about 5:50am.

A fuel tanker and a heavy rigid transport truck were engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

A police spokesperson said the driver of the fuel tanker – a man aged in his 50s – and the other driver – a man aged in his 30s – both suffered critical injuries and died at the scene.

No other vehicles were involved.

At 6:15am, police made an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA) with a one kilometre exclusion zone boundary in place, encompassing the D’Aguilar Highway, the northern end of Nukku Road and the southern end of Nukku Boundary Road.

[The PSPA declaration was revoked about 3:30pm.]

A Queensland Fire Department spokesperson said five urban and two rural fire crews attended the incident, as well as a specialist unit.

At noon, the highway was still blocked, with traffic diversions in place.

[At 6:45pm, a notification was posted that the highway was fully reopened.]

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

Anyone with relevant dashcam footage has been urged to contact police.
