Gympie councillors voted unanimously to increase rates by 5.5 per cent at their 2025-26 Special Budget Meeting on Thursday.
However, fees and charges are also rising:
- Garbage – up 7.5 per cent ($28.20 increase per year)
- Sewerage – up 6.5 per cent ($56.16 increase per year)
- Water access – up 6.5 per cent ($30.36 increase per year)
- Water consumption – up 10 per cent 2.05/kl & $3.67 (up from $1.86 & $3.33)
The Budget includes a total of $106 million set aside for capital works.
Proposed works for Gympie’s Division 6 (ie. Goomeri, Kilkivan and related areas) include:
- Goomeri Aquatic Centre Renewal – Deliver
- Tansey Hall Restumping and Floor Renewal – Design & Deliver
- Breitkreutz Pavilion in Goomeri Upgrade – Design
- Kilkivan Lions Park Playground Renewal – Design
- Watchbox Road Concrete Batter Renewal at Boonara – Design & Deliver
- Ettrickdale Road Floodway Renewal at Boonara – Design & Deliver
- Goomeri State School Pedestrian Access Improvements – Deliver (School Transport Infrastructure Program)
- Goomeri Water Treatment Plant Upgrade – Design & Deliver – $2.075 million
- Kilkivan Water Treatment Plant Upgrade – Design & Start Delivery – $725,000
- Goomeri Sewage Treatment Plant Upgrade – Design & Start Delivery
- Kilkivan Sewage Treatment Plant Upgrade – Design & Start Delivery
On Thursday, the State Government also announced a $42 million investment through its Residential Activation Fund for the Gympie region.
Of this, $36 million will go on water infrastructure and $5.4 million to determine where future residential and industrial development should be built in the region.
The aim is to provide the infrastructure for 5350 new homes.
