A driver has been fined more than $1800 – and lost eight demerit points – after police spotted him doing almost 100km/h over the speed limit at Tansey on Wednesday.

Police were conducting mobile patrols along the Burnett Highway when an officer saw a black BMW being driven at high speed about 4:50pm.

A police spokesperson said the vehicle was travelling at 196km/hr in a 100km/h zone.

The driver was a 26-year-old man from McIntosh Creek.

Superintendent Janelle Andrews, from the Road Policing and Regional Support Command, said speeds like this one were unacceptable and put all road users at risk.

“Every decision you make behind the wheel could affect you or the lives of other people on our roads,” Supt Andrews said.

“No family should have to go through the pain of losing a loved one through road trauma.

“Mobile patrols like these are about keeping our roads safe for all road users and motorists can expect we will be anywhere at any time.”
