South Burnett Regional Council has been invited to submit a formal application for funding to replace trees lost in the Wondai area during the recent storms.

Wednesday’s council meeting was told an Expression of Interest had been submitted for funding under the Federal Government’s 2025 Stronger Communities Program.

The submission had been successfully nominated by Member for Flynn Colin Boyce and the Community Committee.

Council had been asked to submit a formal application by March 21.

The grant program requires a 50 per cent contribution by the applicant. As the total project to replace the trees would be $19,282,  the cost to Council would be $9641.

The meeting was told Wondai residents had approached Council staff suggesting new native trees be planted to replace the more than 20 which were stripped out of the ground during the January storms.

The new trees would be maintained by Council’s Wondai Parks and Garden staff as the trees would need initial watering for six to eight weeks, ongoing maintenance, fertilising, mulching and pruning.

Cr Ros Heit said only suitable trees would be selected and planted if the grant application was successful.
