South Burnett police are taking part in a statewide operation to improve firearm safety across Queensland.
Operation Whiskey Firestorm is checking that firearms are stored correctly as well, in some cases, the suitability of licensed firearm holders to retain their licences.
It was suggested at a recent Kumbia Neighbourhood Watch meeting, that some elderly firearm owners could consider transferring their weapons to other family members.
There was also concerns about weapons and ammunition stored incorrectly in farm sheds which were a tempting target for thieves.
A police spokesperson said there was a clear and simple message: “safety first, secure always”.
“Improper firearm storage continues to be a serious safety risk and it’s the priority of the QPS to ensure that licensed firearm owners have the proper education and support to meet their obligations,” the spokesperson said.
“This will include educational material and engaging with Queenslanders to ensure a strong understanding of responsibilities when it comes to gun safety and ownership.
“This isn’t just about meeting the letter of the law; it’s about doing everything we can to prevent tragedy and crime.
“Unfortunately, we continue to see stolen firearms being used in further crime. Often, they are stolen from premises where firearms were improperly stored.”
