A man was airlifted to hospital with critical injuries after a crash at Gilla which caused major delays on the D’Aguilar Highway on Friday morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 6:55am.

A Queensland Fire Department spokesperson said the crash involved a car and a light rigid truck towing a horse float.

The injured man was pinned by the legs in one of the vehicles.

Rescue crews had to use cutting equipment to remove a door from the vehicle to free the trapped man, who was then lifted out with the assistance of QAS paramedics.

The injured man was then transferred by ambulance to the LifeFlight SGAS rescue helicopter, which had landed in a nearby sportsfield, and airlifted to the Royal Brisbane Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A QAS spokesperson said three other people were also assessed by paramedics at the scene but did not require transport to hospital.

All lanes on the D’Aguilar Highway were fully reopened by 9:30am.
