Some Telstra customers in the Blackbutt and Benarkin areas have been without a consistent mobile phone service for a fortnight.

southburnett.com.au asked Telstra on Friday about the situation after being contacted by a reader.

The spokesperson said the outages were temporary due to upgrades, and all customers had been contacted by SMS to advise them beforehand:

Telstra is upgrading its mobile base station that services Blackbutt and Benarkin by adding additional infrastructure to bring new 5G coverage and upgrade the existing 4G coverage.

The works will provide better connectivity for local residents and required a series of temporary outages or reductions in mobile coverage.

Telstra mobile customers received text messages advising of the upcoming work and a recommendation to activate wi-fi calling.

Landline services, NBN internet services and mobile coverage from other providers are not impacted.

Any calls to Triple Zero from a Telstra mobile when the site was off air were automatically diverted to any working mobile network for connection to emergency services.
