A Kilkivan man has pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death after a fatal head-on crash on the Wide Bay Highway at Lower Wonga four years ago.

Joy Kaloczy, 59, from Veteran, was airlifted to the Royal Brisbane hospital with critical injuries on October 14, 2020, but died four days later.

Steven Curtis, 37 – who was also badly injured in the crash – pleaded guilty in the Gympie District Court last week.

The court was told Curtis overtook a string of traffic at speed in his Commodore before colliding head-on with the Isuzu ute which was carrying Mrs Kaloczy and her husband James.

Mr Kaloczy, who was driving, was also critically injured in the crash.

Curtis was trapped inside his wrecked sedan, which caught on fire after the crash.

A bystander managed to extinguish the flames before emergency services reached the scene.

Curtis will be sentenced at a date to be fixed.
