Lloyd Langton opens the scoring for the Murgon Mustangs against Kingaroy on Saturday afternoon … Langton finished the Minor Semi-Final with three tries and six conversions, ensuring Murgon a spot in the Preliminary Final

August 12, 2024

Kingaroy’s 2024 A Grade rugby league campaign is over after a thumping win by the Murgon Mustangs on Saturday at Jack O’Chin Oval in Cherbourg.

The Mustangs downed the Red Ants 44-28 in the Minor Semi-Final after leading 34-10 at half-time.

The game, played under lights for most of its 80 minutes, was all Murgon’s way in the first half, after the first 15 minutes.

Kingaroy’s defence held more solidly for most of the second, but it wasn’t enough to keep their season alive.

In the second A Grade game on Saturday night – the Major Semi-Final – the Nanango Stags booked a place in the Grand Final after defeating Cherbourg at their home ground.

The Hornets finished the regular season just one point ahead of the Stags, so both teams had something to prove.

Nanango led 22-8 at half-time and held off the Hornets in the second half to down the home team 38-20.

The loss has set up a local derby Preliminary Final this weekend between Murgon and Cherbourg to determine the second Grand Final spot.

Earlier in the day, Red Ants fans had more to cheer about …

In the Under 14s semis, Kingaroy went through to the Grand Final, after defeating Cherbourg 30-22 while Murgon’s campaign ended after the Chinchilla Bulldogs proved too strong, 24-20.

The Hornets will now play Chinchilla to decide the second Grand Final spot.

The two Preliminary Finals are scheduled to be played this Saturday at Fred Kassulke Oval in Nanango (see below).
