Never drive through flooded roads … and be especially careful at night as conditions can chavge very quickly

The South Burnett’s Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) is urging residents to be prepared in case extreme weather linked to Tropical Cyclone Kirrily affects the region.

A Council spokesperson said TC Kirrily was expected to affect northern Queensland but there was always a chance a low could form and track southwards.

The LDMG and Council are currently taking precautions around early preparedness and have requested the community also be prepared.

LDMG chair Cr Danita Potter reminded residents to have an emergency kit, follow messages from the Bureau of Meteorology and keep up to date with Council’s Disaster Dashboard.

The South Burnett Disaster Dashboard has live links to QFES, BoM, Qld Traffic and Ergon together with active evacuation centres should they be required.

And never drive through floodwaters. Driving into floodwater is the number one cause of flood-related deaths in Queensland.

Ideas about what to pack in an emergency kit:

  • Long-life food and toiletries in case you can’t get to the shops
  • Drinking water in case the water supply stops working
  • Batteries, a torch and radio in case the power goes out

These are the basics, but also consider what other items your family might use if you had to stay at home for multiple days.

Other things residents can do to be ready for extreme weather include:

  • Clean-up – Check around the house and yard and make sure your home will hold up against the elements.
  • Sign-up – Subscribe to mobile weather notifications from the Bureau of Meteorology or Council’s Disaster Dashboard so you’re informed and can act quickly.
  • Connect – Know your neighbours and connect with your community.
  • Get covered – Check your insurance to make sure your property can be fixed or replaced if is damaged.
