Stanwell Corporation has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with German-based energy company RWE which aims to develop two new wind farms in Queensland.
One of the wind farms would be a 1100MW project located between Theodore and Biloela.
The second project is a mooted 720MW wind farm “in early-stage development” at at unstated location in southern Queensland.
If they go ahead, the aim is for the two wind farms to be completed by 2029.
The Queensland Conservation Council welcomed Wednesday’s announcement but urged a “well-managed rollout” of clean energy projects “so that First Nations people, regional communities and nature all benefit”.
“Now that the energy transformation is well under way it’s imperative that we fix Australia’s and Queensland’s broken nature protection laws and deliver thorough biodiversity mapping so that we’re building clean energy projects in the best locations,” campaigner Stephanie Gray said.
