Two Cherbourg boys – aged 12 and 11 – have been charged after investigations into a string of burglaries and thefts in Murgon.

The 12-year-old was charged with five offences linked to alleged break-ins to houses and vehicles. He has been dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act.

The 11-year-old has been charged with seven similar offences.

A Murgon Police spokesperson said investigations were continuing into the incidents.

He warned that property owners should remain vigilant and ensure their property was secure, even when they were at home.

The incidents under investigation include:

  • The unlawful entry of a motor vehicle in Taylor Street East which is  believed to have occurred between midnight and 9:00am on July 14. It is alleged that unknown offenders have entered an unlocked vehicle parked in the driveway, searched it and threw property from inside across the yard.
  • A burglary in Taylor Street East about 11:30pm on August 13. It is alleged the offenders tried to gain entry through a side window, damaging it. It is believed nothing was stolen.
  • An attempted burglary in Wright Way at 4:30am on August 14. CCTV footage shows two people approach the dwelling with a golf club and trying to open the locked front door before leaving.
  • A burglary from Tiernan Street which is believed to have occurred between 9:00pm on August 13 and 7:00am the following morning. The thieves gained entry through the front door, which was believed to be locked, and stole property while the resident was asleep. Police alerted the owner to the burglary while they were conducting inquiries in relation to other incidents in the area.
  • A burglary from a business on Macalister Street at 10:40pm on August 13. CCTV footage shows the thieves entered the building by damaging security bars on the windows. Once inside, they stole lollies.

The spokesperson said police were extremely grateful to the members of the public that have contacted them with information or provided CCTV footage.

“If you reside in the vicinity of these offences and have access to CCTV footage, please review and make contact with police should any persons of interest be identified,” the spokesperson said.
