Two people died after two light planes collided close to the ground at Caboolture Airfield on Friday morning.

Police and emergency services were called to the aerodrome on McNaught Road about 10:30am.

It is believed a Jabiru J430 was taking off from one runway while a Piper Pawnee was landing on a cross runway.

The Pawnee suffered wing damage and managed to land safely, while the Jabiru broke up when it struck the ground near the edge of the airfield.

Two people travelling in the Jabiru died in the crash.

The pilot of the Pawnee, who was the only occupant on board, did not suffer serious injuries.

The Police Forensic Crash Unit will work with the Australian Transport Safety Bureau to investigate the cause of the collision.

Police have appealed to anyone who witnessed the incident, or the movements of the aircraft prior to the collision, to contact them.
