A chilly Kingaroy night couldn’t scare away patrons from the League Legends night hosted by the Kingaroy Men’s Shed on Saturday.

Rugby league legends Shane Webcke, Darius Boyd and Ben Hannant discussed how they – at some times unexpectedly – got into rugby league.

The trio answered questions posed by Deputy Mayor Gavin Jones.

Early setbacks, for example not being selected for rep teams as a youngster, did not stop the trio from achieving success with persistence and hard work.

They shared their struggles along the way, coping with horrendous “boot camp” team-building tasks, injuries and personal issues.

But they also shared the valuable support they had received from key male figures in their lives.

All three were full of praise for then-Broncos coach Wayne Bennett, especially Webcke who shared how Bennett ignored a vital training day with the Maroons to attend his father’s funeral.

Coping and building resilience were key themes for the night, which had a focus on men’s health.

The audience of more than 100 enjoyed a free barbecue served up by the volunteers from the Kingaroy Men’s Shed while they listened to the inspirational talks.

There was also a cash bar operating at the 18+ event.

The evening was sponsored by the South Burnett Regional Council which received funding from the Federal Government’s Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grants Program.
