The judges of the Barambah Youth Services Hub’s second annual art competition had a tough job picking the winners after a record number of entries were submitted.
The competition featured two categories: Ages 10-14 and 15-18.
Prize vouchers, donated by the South Burnett Regional Council, were awarded to the winner ($100) and highly commended ($50) in each category.
Hub manager Gaye O’Sullivan said the competition was open to young artists from across the South Burnett.
She said entries had come in from Kingaroy, Murgon and Cherbourg.
The independent judges were Elaine Madill, from Wondai Regional Art Gallery; and Carl Simpson, from The Ration Shed.
The winners were presented with certificates and vouchers by SBRC community development co-ordinator Margie Hams in a small ceremony on Friday morning at the Hub.
Age 10-14:
- Winner – Elvie Saltner; Year 6, Cherbourg SS
- Highly commended – Logan Robinson; Year 10, Murgon SHS
Age 15-18:
- Winner – Natalie Booth; Year 12, Murgon SHS
- Highly commended – Amika-May Collard; Year 10, Murgon SHS
Barambah Youth Services Hub (Gukoore Kun’du) is located next door to Murgon State High School.
Gaye said there were now more than 16 support services which could be accessed via the Hub, which is open to young people aged 10-24.
These included the GP In School (Dr Emma Leu-Marshall), vocational support training, drug and alcohol counselling, and psychological services.
“And if people can’t make it to Murgon, we can also offer a telehealth option as well for some services,” Gaye said.
The artworks from the competition will be on display at the Hub until next Wednesday.
Some will also join the Hub’s permanent collection.
