South Burnett councillors have unanimously endorsed a plan to create a management committee to establish a Country Universities Centre (CUC) hub in Kingaroy.

After the Kingaroy hub was set up, satellite CUCs could be opened in other local towns, including Cherbourg.

The CUCs would encourage students to study online in a dedicated learning and study space, and hopefully fill local employment gaps.

Cr Danita Potter said Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council had indicated they would support a CUC being established.

“Powerlink are a foundation sponsor of CUC Maranoa in Roma and are supportive to explore their involvement with a Kingaroy Centre,” Cr Potter said.

“With this in mind we would also need investment and support from all sectors within the community, State and Federal Government.”

Council’s Liveability, Governance and Finance Standing Committee Meeting was told on Wednesday that Cr Potter had travelled to Roma to see their CUC in action.

She had been advised that establishing a local management committee would be the first step in bringing a CUC to the South Burnett.
