South Burnett Regional Council hopes to attract more corporate stays at Bjelke-Petersen Dam with a planned $200,000 upgrade of facilities.

A $50,000 grant from the State Government’s Tourism Experience Development Fund, supplemented by Council expenditure of $150,000, will fund a number of improvements, including nine new split air-conditioners in cabins and an upgrade of the kiosk and eatery.

The manager’s residence will also be painted, nine carports erected and a new shower area installed in the accommodation/conference facility.

Tourism Portfolio holder Cr Jane Erkens said the upgrades were “important to develop a new customer experience”.

“This (grant) funding together with the Council’s commitment will assist developing a niche market focused on corporate retreats in a natural location,” she said.

“We have to use the South Burnett’s own natural advantages to attract visitors to stay longer. This project will facilitate targeting corporate customers to invest in the same natural retreat that is currently enjoyed by recreational caravan, camping and fishing enthusiasts.”

Work is expected to begin next March and be completed by August.
