The State Government’s proposal to extend National Park access to beekeepers until 2044 has been supported by local MP Deb Frecklington, but she has questioned why a deadline is needed at all.

Beekeepers have been fighting to overturn laws which would have seen their hives kicked out of National Parks by 2024.

The State Government is now proposing an extension to 2044.

Mrs Frecklington said she had been proud to speak in Parliament in support of local beekeepers to highlight how important it was for them to have continued access.

“The next generation of beekeepers needs certainty,” Mrs Frecklington said.

“This Labor Government wants to impose another 20-year sentence to 2044. While I support the extension, I question why we need another deadline.”

Mrs Frecklington said Queensland would be the only State with a sunset clause.

“Ultimately, this can only lead to people walking away from the industry, or choosing to expand into NSW or Victoria where there is increased certainty for their business,” she said.

“I would like to thank the Queensland Beekeepers Association, and local beekeeper Brad Jensen, who have been keeping me updated on this issue.

“The South Burnett is home to many commercial beekeepers and they need our support.

“Because without bees, we simply would not have much of the food we need and love, not to mention the amazing honey they produce.”

No decision has been made yet on the proposed 2044 extension.
