South Burnett Regional Council has authorised temporary repairs to begin on the South Burnett Rail Trail, which was badly damaged in the recent floods.

A Council spokesperson said multiple sections of the rail trail were damaged between Wondai and Murgon, and between Murgon and the Goomeri boundary.

These sections are closed.

A local contractor has been appointed to repair the Murgon-Goomeri section with works to begin immediately.

These should be completed by the end of the month, subject to further rain delays.

Council work crews have already begun repairing sections between Wondai and Murgon. These are expected to be completed by the end of the month.

“Once all work is completed, the South Burnett section of the Kilkivan Kingaroy Rail Trail will fully reopen, with caution to be observed by all users,” the spokesperson said.

“Permanent repairs will be conducted at a future date, subject to budget allocation and following investigations into available funding.

“Temporary repairs are being paid for by Council, with other projects being delayed based on priority and community expectations.

“Further updates and re-opening dates of the Rail Trail will be provided.”

    • The section from Kingaroy to Murgon, ie. the sealed section, is fully open. Work is still being undertaken on the gravel section between Murgon and Goomeri. We believe the section from Goomeri to Kilkivan has not yet been repaired.
