March 24, 2022

One more person has died with COVID-19 in the Darling Downs Health region, taking the toll since the pandemic began to 20.

The latest death was revealed in Queensland Health statistics on Thursday and coincides with a spike in active cases across the State.

There are officially 52,084 active cases in Queensland at the moment, including 11,018 confirmed during the latest reporting period.

The true level of infection is likely to be much higher, with not all people registering a positive Rapid Antigen Test reporting their condition to Queensland Health, and people with mild symptoms not bothering to get tested.

The sudden rise in active cases is noticeable in the South Burnett, with anecdotal reports from schools, government bodies and local businesses of both adults and children in isolation.

Since March 1, there have been 56 new cases reported by Queensland Health in the South Burnett council area, and eight new cases in Cherbourg (five of these were reported on Wednesday).

Across Queensland, there are currently 271 people being treated for COVID-19 in hospital, including 11 in intensive care units.

Another six deaths were announced on Thursday, taking Queensland’s toll since March 2020 to 706; all but seven of these deaths have occurred since the borders were reopened in December.

COVID-19 cases are also rising sharply across Australia, with authorities laying the blame on a new, more transmissible version of the Omicron variant.

There are an estimated 420,241 active cases across the nation, with 63,107 added in the past 24 hours.

Across Australia, there are 102 people in ICU, including 24 patients on ventilators.

The national death toll since the pandemic began is now 5824.

These statistics, from Queensland Health, show the total number of confirmed positive cases per Local Government Area since the pandemic began in January 2020.

They are NOT the total of current ACTIVE cases but demonstrate how the virus has spread recently throughout the local community.

We have taken snapshots on Dec 13, Dec 21 and daily since December 29.

These figures are current to 7:00pm on Wednesday (March 23):

NB. Data is reported by Queensland Health daily but can vary over time due to case reviews. When we took the first snapshots, Cherbourg LGA had not been added to the list by Qld Health as no cases had been recorded there. From December 31, data is current to 7:00pm the previous day. Numbers for all regions must also be considered underestimated. Not everyone who has tested positive using a Rapid Antigen Test has reported their result to Queensland Health. Not everyone who has had a mild dose of the disease has been tested. Also, the official statistics show 315,923 positive results (as at March 23) which have not been allocated to a Local Government Area.
