QFES Commissioner Greg Leach has paid tribute to SES volunteer Merryl Dray,  62, who died after a vehicle was swept off the road by floodwaters on Friday night.

Three other SES volunteers, who were travelling in the same vehicle as the woman, were rescued.

The SES unit had been responding to a call for help from a family after floodwater threatened to inundate their home.

“The SES and broader QFES family is saddened by the tragic loss of SES volunteer Merryl Dray during a flood response at Coolana in the Lockyer Valley overnight,” Commissioner Leach said.

“Merryl was a much-loved member of the Lowood SES Group where she volunteered more than 520 hours of her time over the last four and a half years.

“Merryl was trained in storm damage response, first aid and traffic control and was passionate about helping her local community.

“The Dray family and the Lowood SES Group thank the community for the love and support that is being extended to them during this difficult time and thanks the media for respect of their privacy.

“Investigations into the incident are ongoing.”
