A woman aged in her 40s had to be cut free from her wrecked vehicle after a head-on crash blocked traffic on the New England Highway on Thursday evening.

Emergency services were called to the incident, near Cabarlah, at 5:47pm.

The RACQ LifeFlight helicopter was also called, and was able to land on the highway close to the crash site.

The LifeFlight crew worked alongside QFES and QAS personnel to free and treat the woman, who had suffered multiple injuries.

She was then flown to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane in a serious but stable condition.

QAS paramedics transported two other people to Toowoomba Hospital in a stable condition: a teenage girl with abdominal injuries and a woman aged in her 50s with chest injuries.

Police closed the highway while emergency crews worked at the scene.
