Well-known Murgon businessman Leo Geraghty OAM will step back into the role of Murgon Business and Development Association (MBDA) president after a 15-month break.

The appointment was made on Thursday at the MBDA’s first monthly breakfast meeting for 2022.

It came after an announcement that current president Mark Smith was reluctantly standing down from the position due to ill health.

Mr Geraghty, who owns Clifton Motors and edits the town’s Murgon Moments monthly news magazine, was first appointed MBDA president in 2006.

He served in that role for the next 14 years until late 2020, when he stepped down in favour of Mr Smith.

At the time, Mr Geraghty said he planned to go into semi-retirement.

Since then, however, he has been involved in the development of Murgon’s new fossil museum and art gallery, as well as working to bring BlazeAid to the region to assist after the Tansey / Booubyjan floods.

He has also led discussions between the MBDA and South Burnett Regional Council on a proposed upgrade of QEII Park in the town’s centre; examined the possibility of opening a Heritage community branch in the town; and spearheaded the MBDA’s research into the recently launched Why Leave Town Murgon Gift Card “shop local” promotion.

MBDA vice-president Lance Rea, secretary Margaret Long and treasurer Lorraine Goodchild will continue in their roles.

On Thursday, Margaret Long told southburnett.com.au the group was shocked to hear of Mr Smith’s illness and all members wished him a speedy and complete recovery.

During his 14 months in the role, Mr Smith had introduced popular “meet and greet” evenings into the group’s meeting schedule and had taken a keen interest in finding a permanent fix to problems being experienced with some of the town’s CCTV security system cameras.
