Work has started on clearing the new mountain bike tracks in Russell Park at the Bunya Mountains.

Western Downs Councillor Kylie Bourne said the project would bolster visitor opportunities in the region and boost the local economy.

“The mountain bike trails at Russell Park will bring a new standard of adventure experiences to the Western Downs, and we are excited to see project contractor Common Ground Trails commencing track establishment works on site,” Cr Bourne said.

“Approximately two kilometres of track has already been established through the natural area, with works to upgrade the Russell Park Day Use area to commence in coming months.

“Once fully complete, the precinct will include five one-way dedicated mountain bike trail loops and two dual direction shared use link trails suitable to all ages and riding abilities, and upgraded facilities at the Russell Park Day Use Area.

“This project is going to be a game changer for tourism and recreational experiences here on the Western Downs, and we are excited to see works progress over coming months.”

A Council spokesperson said residents and visitors were reminded to be aware of construction crews operating in the area and to steer clear of worksites.

The project is on track to be completed by June 2022.

The spokesperson said the trails were designed to be considerate of the natural environment.

“Council is working closely with multiple stakeholders, including the traditional owners, to ensure that the project is respectful of the pristine Bunya Mountains environment and Indigenous culture,” the spokesperson said.
