Health Minister Yvette D’Ath announced on Thursday that Krispin Hajkowicz will no longer be taking up the position of Queensland Chief Health Officer.
The shock announcement comes within days of Dr Jeannette Young taking up her appointment as State Governor on Monday.
Dr Young had previously described Dr Hajkowicz as the “perfect person” to take over the CHO role at this point of the pandemic.
As the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital’s director of infectious diseases, Dr Hajkowicz had been co-ordinating all of Queensland’s COVID hospitals during the pandemic.
Minister D’Ath said Deputy CHO Dr Peter Aitken would act in the role until a permanent replacement to Dr Young was appointed.
She said she respected Dr Hajkowicz’ decision, made for “personal reasons”, and his request for privacy.
