Work to upgrade a dangerous, narrow bridge on the Chinchilla-Wondai Road has been delayed but not defunded, says Transport Minister Mark Bailey.

Minister Bailey was answering a Question on Notice from Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington.

Mrs Frecklington asked the Minister to clarify:

  • What constraints in the surrounding environment had prevented TMR from finding a suitable alignment for the new bridge
  • What “higher priority” projects in the Southern Queensland region had been progressed because the G.S. Bond Bridge had been removed from the Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Program
  • When would the project be reconsidered, given the Nanango Electorate had recorded Queensland’s second highest fatalities in the first half of this year?

Minister Bailey said a budget of $13.05 million had been approved for the project and remained allocated.

“As part of its due diligence, TMR has been investigating engineering options to replace the bridge on a new alignment,” he said.

“These investigations have resulted in the need to consider alternative alignments due to identified complex construction constraints.”

The Minister said he had now asked TMR to contact Mrs Frecklington’s office to arrange a briefing on the project.
