Applications for Stanwell’s Cid Burke Occupational Health and Safety Study Support Scholarship close on Monday.
One South Burnett local resident will receive funding towards formal qualifications in occupational health and safety through a recognised tertiary institution.
The scholarship is designed to support school leavers, or recent school leavers, with a passion for both workplace health and safety, and their community, to transition to tertiary studies.
Tarong power stations Acting Site Manager Owen Bevan said the scholarship was a fantastic opportunity for someone who actively participated in the local South Burnett community to kick-start their career in workplace health and safety, or a related field.
“We understand the challenges that regional students face when moving away from home to study, and the difficulties this may pose for both the student and their family,” Mr Bevan said.
“The scholarship has been designed with those challenges in mind, to support a South Burnett student with both their study and accommodation costs throughout the duration of their course.
“In addition to funding, the scholarship provides the recipient with the opportunity to receive assistance and guidance from an industry mentor, and to take up vacation employment with Stanwell.”
To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must:
- Live in the South Burnett
- Have enrolled to study workplace health and safety, or a related field, full-time
- Be a school leaver, or have left school in the past two years
- Have demonstrated service to their community.

The scholarship is named after former Tarong Power Station employee Cid Burke.
Cid took over the role of Operational Workplace Health and Safety Coordinator at TPS in 1988.
A Stanwell spokesperson said Cid showed genuine care and commitment to the safety and wellbeing of all employees.
He was also an active and well-known community member and was much-loved and respected in both his workplace and the community.
After Cid died in 2008, a scholarship was set up to assist a student from the South Burnett to gain a qualification in Workplace Health and Safety, or a related field.
