A third round of the successful Cherbourg Positive Parenting Program (Triple P) has been scheduled to begin later this month.

The program is a collaborative between Cherbourg Health Service, CRAICCHS, Cherbourg Council and the University of Queensland.

“The programs are known collectively as D’arin Djanum, which means ‘strong together’ in the Wakka Wakka language,” Cherbourg Community Health clinical psychologist and project co-ordinator Arvind Ponnapalli said.

“Promoting children’s social and emotional wellbeing and preparing them to thrive in the future is what every parent, family, and community wants.

“We often draw upon parenting practices from previous generations that provided solutions to common parenting challenges.”

Mr Ponnapalli said parents and caregivers could also draw on cultural wisdom, family and community support, and positive parenting strategies that are proven to help child and family wellbeing.

“The entire project is being led at the community level,” CRAICCHS manager Katherine Simpson said.

Ronella Fewquandie and Leeann Cliff, from CRAICCHS, are accredited to provide Indigenous Triple P in the community.

Cherbourg Health Service Manager Tarita Fisher said the program – on July 20-22 and August 3 – will be held at the Ration Shed Boys Dormitory conference facilities.

Parents or caregivers have to attend all four days from 9:30am to 2:00pm to complete the program.

The group program is free of charge to parents, grandparents, and carers of children aged between two and 12 years of age.

There will COVID-safe catering, including morning tea and lunch provided, plus free Triple P resources for all participants.

Anyone interested in registering should call Cherbourg Community Health on (07) 4169-8900 or CRAICCHS on (07) 4169-8600.
