South Burnett residents will be able to enjoy a rare mix of opera and country music in June this year.
At Wednesday’s corporate standing committee meeting, Councillors voted unanimously to spend $6000 for the South Burnett to take part in Opera Queensland’s most extensive regional tour in its 40-year history.
“Are You Lonesome Tonight” will feature traditional operatic favourites from composers such as Verdi and Puccini, intermingled with country songs made popular by Slim Dusty and Dolly Parton.
This year’s Opera Queensland tour will visit 30 communities across the State during May and June, covering a distance of almost 7000km.
Their appearance in Kingaroy will be the first time the group has performed in the region.
While the venue and ticket prices for the June 15 performance have yet to be decided, the show is likely to be held at Kingaroy Town Hall and ticket prices are expected to be set low to cover costs.
Guests can wear jeans and boots – or tuxedos and ballgowns – as they prefer.
Crs Kathy Duff and Kirstie Schumacher said credit for bringing Opera Queensland to the South Burnett really belonged to Arts portfolio chair Cr Danita Potter – who was absent from the meeting – and fitted in well with Council’s objective of increased investment in the arts.
The Council is expected to release more details about the concert in the next few weeks.
