Kingaroy Christmas Carnival Committee president Craig Lucas … the pandemic has scuttled plans for this year’s event

August 19, 2020

The Kingaroy Christmas Carnival is the latest victim of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Organising committee president Craig Lucas said the decision to cancel this year’s event had been made at the committee’s meeting last Thursday night.

“Due to the current situation of the COVID-19 pandemic it was agreed that unfortunately we will have to cancel this year’s Christmas Carnival,” Craig told southburnett.com.au

The decision was made after looking over the current Health Directions.

Craig said it would have been too difficult to implement the 1.5 metre restrictions as well as wiping down rides after each child.

“We would not have been able to put out seats for people to sit on,” he said.

The committee had also noted that other events – scheduled to be held after the Kingaroy carnival – had also been cancelled.

“Cancellation will protect the elderly, the young, our volunteers, in fact everybody,” he said.

Craig said the decision to “call it early” was best for local businesses.

“They are doing it tough and I’m not sure how much sponsorship we would have been going to get, as well,” he said.

However, the organising committee hasn’t totally written off plans to do something to mark Christmas.

“We are possibly looking at doing something a little later on this year, like a movie night where we can limit it to a certain number of people,” Craig said.
