Toowoomba Regional Council will begin automating CBD pedestrian crossings as soon as possible to help limit the spread of COVID-19.
The measure follows discussions between the Department of Transport and Main Roads and Council around the need to minimise unnecessary surface contact at pedestrian crossings.
General Manager of Infrastructure Services Mike Brady said traffic lights would become automated at key CBD locations in Toowoomba.
Pedestrian crossing buttons would not need to be pressed between 6:00am and 6:00pm.
“We are programming lights at major intersections to automatically transition between traffic and pedestrian access,” Mr Brady said.
“In total, all 19 signalised intersections within the area bound by Clifford, Herries, Neil and Russell streets and the signals on Anzac Avenue at Clifford Gardens will be automated.
“Pedestrian buttons at these locations will not need to be pressed between 6:00am and 6:00pm to cross the road safely.
“If you need to visit these areas during these hours, please don’t press the button – just wait for the green signal to cross.
“Signage explaining the new measure is being installed at traffic lights this week.
“Outside these hours, and for other pedestrian crossings, please use your elbow to press the button.
“Signage advising people to use their elbow is also being installed this week.”
