A young thief tried to bum a smoke off a man aged in his 60s in Murgon on Monday morning … and when he refused, stole his car instead.

A police spokesperson said a group of four or five youths approached a man about 10:15am outside a house in Coronation Drive.

One of them asked the man for a cigarette, but he replied no.

About 15 minutes later, the man spotted the youth in the driver’s seat of his Hyundai Santa Fe which was parked in the driveway of his house.

The keys were in the ignition as the man had been about to drive away.

The owner ran over to the vehicle and opened the door, however the youth allegedly produced a knife and pointed it at the man.

The owner quickly backed away.

The thief – accompanied by other youths in the vehicle – then backed the Hyundai down the driveway and sped off.

Police investigations into the incident are continuing.
