The Sandy Creek pedestrian footbridge connecting Nanango State School to Pioneer Park has been closed amid fears it could collapse … and so has the Home Creek Loop Road bridge at Cushnie

August 21, 2019

Children attending Nanango State School will face a longer walk if they want to cross Sandy Creek to enter Pioneer Park.

On Wednesday, the South Burnett Regional Council announced it has closed a pedestrian bridge half-way along the park because of safety concerns.

It has also closed Home Creek Bridge on Home Creek Loop Road at Cushnie for similar reasons.

A Council spokesperson said recent inspections of the two bridges found structural defects that affected their load-bearing capacities.

Both were closed immediately.

The closures will remain in effect while Council engineers carry out more structural analysis to determine future options.

Council believes the closures will have a minimal impact because there are alternative routes available.

In Nanango State School’s case, this will involve a slightly longer walk from the school to Pioneer Park using the Ben Walters Bridge in Drayton Street.

In Cushnie’s case, motorists can use a side track to cross Home Creek.

Any residents with concerns should contact the Council’s Works Branch on (07) 4189-9100.
