A 31-year-old motorcycle rider who failed to stay at the scene of a crash in Adermann Drive, Kingaroy in February told Kingaroy Magistrates Court on Monday he had an excuse … his finger was hanging off.

William Hayes, 31, told magistrate Louisa Pink he had to get to the hospital and eventually “lost” the finger.

Hayes pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention, drink driving and failing to provide particulars after a crash.

Police prosecutor Sgt Pepe Gangemi said Hayes collided with a parked Holden Captiva in Adermann Drive at 9:15pm on February 2.

Police called to the incident found blood at the scene.

They later located Hayes who was receiving medical treatment.

He had a blood alcohol reading of .096.

Magistrate Pink fined Hayes $250 for driving without due care and attention and ordered he pay $600 compensation to the owners of the vehicle (the insurance excess).

On the drink-driving charge, he was fined $500 and disqualified from driving for two months.

The magistrate said she would take into account Hayes’ medical emergency in regards to the third charge.

He was convicted of failing to provide particulars but not further punished.
