Two winemakers who produce fine wines using South Burnett grapes have been named as finalists in Australia’s largest competition for young winemakers.

Alastair Reed and Sam Cook make wines for Konpira Maru, a winery located in the King Valley in north-east Victoria.

They source their grapes from their local area as well as Clovely Estate at Moffatdale.

The pair produced their first vintage in 2014, just 600 bottles.

They now produce wines with names such as Murgon Mango Pét-Nat and La Douche Tropicale de Murgon Verdelho

The Young Gun of Wine announced its top 50 finalists for 2019 from around the country on Wednesday.

The Top 50 includes winemakers from South Australia, Victoria, Western Australia, NSW/ACT and Queensland.

The judging panel tasted 250 wines over two days in Melbourne.

The top 12 will be announced in April, after which the “People’s Choice” winners will be decided at tasting events in Melbourne and Sydney.

The Young Gun of Wine 2019 winner will be announced in Adelaide in June.
