Applications for a special $5000 South Burnett tertiary bursary close on Thursday (January 31).

The Dr Ellen Mary Kent Hughes Memorial Scholarship provides a $5000 grant to a South Burnett woman to support her in her chosen area of study.

The bursary is co-ordinated each year by not-for-profit organisation South Burnett Women to create opportunities for local women.

It was launched in 2016.

Dr Ellen Mary Kent Hughes worked as a doctor early last century and became Queensland’s first female councillor when she was elected to Kingaroy Shire Council in 1923.

Women of all ages and backgrounds have been encouraged to apply.
