A small group of local residents attended a community forum in Kingaroy on Friday to learn more about the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Maranoa MP David Littleproud, who officially opened the forum at the Kingaroy Town Hall Supper Room, said the NDIS rollout had begun in the South Burnett three months ago.

“I wanted to hold this forum so our community could learn more about the NDIS and bring up any concerns so we can address them,” Mr Littleproud said.

The NDIS is administered by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and agency staff were on hand on Friday to answer questions.

“The NDIS is the largest social reform since Medicare,” Mr Littleproud said.

“It’s a once-in-a-generation landmark reform and the NDIS is making a real difference, especially in rural communities like ours.

“I believe one of the biggest tragedies for our rural communities is when a loved one is forced to move away – move to a larger town or city, away from family and everything they’ve ever known – to receive care.

“The NDIS rollout is making a difference to this.

“I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and working with the numerous disability support groups in my electorate.

“I have sat in their offices, with their staff and clients; listened to their heart-wrenching stories and also stories of wonderful support provided.

“These professionals and those living with disability and their families need the support of the NDIS.”
