Firefighters continued to monitor a large fire burning in the Woolooga / Sexton areas on Thursday night.

The fire broke out about 9:30am on Wednesday.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services downgraded the alert overnight but reinstated a “Watch and Act – Prepare To Leave” on Thursday morning as the fire headed towards Woolooga.

Firefighters had three waterbombing helicopters, 35 trucks, five bulldozers and more than 125 personnel at the scene during Thursday.

Five rural sheds are reported to have been destroyed and up to 30 buildings, including homes and a large cattle property, have been under threat.

Residents in Thomas Street, Woolooga, and students at Woolooga State School were evacuated on Thursday as a precautionary measure.

Crews will remain on scene overnight monitoring the fire and conducting backburning operations.

EARLIER:

Residents have been warned to prepare to leave in the wake of a large fire burning in the vicinity of Brooweena-Woolooga Road at Woolooga.

A “Watch and Act – Prepare to Leave” alert (see below) was issued at 2:00pm on Wednesday.

The fire was travelling from the intersection of Brooweena-Woolooga Road and Bauple-Woolooga Road in a southerly direction towards the community of Woolooga.

The fire is likely to impact areas between the intersection of Brooweena-Woolooga Road and Bauple-Woolooga Road and the Wide Bay Highway, Woolooga.

At 2:00pm, 16 QFES crews were on the scene as well as Queensland Parks and Wildlife crews.

Water bombers were also dropping loads on the fire.

The fire was reported to emergency services about 9:30am.

Fire crews were protecting local homes and other structures.

At noon, QFES reported the fire was travelling in a southerly direction towards the Wide Bay Highway.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:

• Listen to your local radio station or visit the Rural Fire Service (RFS) website for regular updates.

• If you have a bushfire survival plan, finalise it now so you are ready to follow it.

• If you do not have a bushfire survival plan, or if your plan is to leave, identify where you will go if you leave the area.

• Advise family and friends of your plan.

• Close windows and doors to minimise smoke exposure.

• If you suffer from a respiratory condition, keep your medication close by.

• Drive with caution in low-visibility conditions.

• Contact your neighbours to see if they need help preparing for the bushfire.

• Pack important documents and essential items (eg. passports, birth certificates, prescription medication, food and water, and protective clothing) in case you need to leave the area.

• Put on protective clothing (eg. a long-sleeved cotton shirt, boots with thick soles).

• Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

• Bring pets inside; restrain them with a leash, a cage, or inside a secure room; and provide them with plenty of water.

• Take action to protect your livestock.

• Move flammable materials such as doormats, wheelie bins, and outdoor furniture away from your house.

• Fill containers such as your bath, sinks, and buckets with water so you have access to drinking water and firefighting water.

• Close windows and doors, sealing the gaps under doors and screens with wet towels to keep smoke out of the house.
