Member for Maranoa David Littleproud has called for the life of Tarong Power Station to be extended beyond its projected closure date in 2030.
He said State Government – which owns the coal-fired power station – should refurbish it “to save jobs and reduce emissions”.
“The Federal Coalition Government has put the NEG to bed and is adopting ACCC recommendations to try to lower the cost of electricity bills,” Mr Littleproud said.
“The ACCC recommendations which the Federal Government will adopt will allow for the refurbishment of existing power stations.
“The Queensland Government could refurbish the 1400 megawatt Tarong coal-fired power station near Kingaroy.
“This would keep despatchable baseload power in the grid and also keep hundreds of South Burnett workers in jobs for longer.
“The station has said it has enough coal until 2030 but the Queensland Government could shore up South Burnett jobs and extend its life whilst making it more environmentally friendly.
“Queensland Labor should think about jobs and the energy grid. This is a simple way they can help Queenslanders and the South Burnett.”
