Firefighters were called on Thursday morning after smoke was spotted coming out of the front of a former shop in Toomey Street, Yarraman.
A fire brigade spokesman said there were no occupants in the building, which is located opposite Douglas Street.
At 11:45am, firefighters were on the scene and assessing the situation.
No flames were coming from the building but a small amount of smoke could be seen near an awning.
No further information is available.
