The South Burnett rugby league community is in mourning following the death of Murgon Mustangs’ junior coach Andrew Cole in a highway smash near Booubyjan at the weekend.

It is believed Mr Cole, who coached the Mustangs’ U14 side, was on his way to Mundubbera with his young son Bailey for the annual “Clash For Cash” league day when the head-on crash occurred at Tomine Creek.

Bailey, 12, was flown to Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital in Brisbane where he is in intensive care.

The female driver of the other vehicle was also flown by rescue helicopter to a Brisbane hospital; her injuries are believed to be non-life threatening.

Police are still investigating the cause of the incident.

The Murgon Mustangs have organised for counsellors from the NRL to visit Murgon on Tuesday afternoon to assist club members.

A GoFundMe page has also been set up by family friend Siobhan Lowe to assist the Cole family; with more than $2300 raised by Monday morning.

“I want to do everything I can to help this family and I know being able to give support financially will go a long way as they have a long, hard road ahead of them and need all the help they can get,” Siobhan wrote.

“Please give anything you can, every little bit adds up.”
