The Nanango Race Club will be holding the South Burnett’s first race meeting of the year at the Lee Park Raceway on Saturday, February 24.

The race club used to hold its first meeting in January, but decided to drop it last year to sidestep the heat and thunderstorms.

And what was usually its second meeting – a Saturday on or near Valentine’s Day – was lost when another race club claimed the date.

But this turned out to be a lucky thing.

A Valentines Day meeting this year would have come right in the middle of record-breaking February temperatures when no-one would have been in any mood to venture outside.

By contrast, this Saturday the Weather Bureau are forecasting a pleasant summer day with a maximum temperature of 28 degrees, and the race club is expecting a good roll-up after a 12-week lull in the region’s busy racing cycle.

The meeting’s fashion theme is ‘Floral Shirts, Floppy Hats and Floaty Dresses’.

Guests are encouraged to dress up in their best pink outfits, hats and ties to be in the running for some great Fashions Of The Field spot prizes.

Deputy Mayor Kathy Duff will be one of the judges, and fashionistas are welcome to try to out-pink her.

The club’s popular Champagne@the Bit Bar will be serving up bubbly and platters and there’ll be a licensed bar and barbecue running on site, along with bookies and an on-course tote.

Buses will be running from Kingaroy’s Glendon Street Bus Depot at noon, and Nanango’s Fitzroy Hotel at 12:20pm.

Gates will open at the track at noon and the first race of the day’s five race card will leave the barriers at 1:30pm.

Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for pensioners (under-15s are free).
