The trial of underground coal gasification (UCG) company Linc Energy began in the Brisbane District Court on Monday.
The company, which is in liquidation, faces five charges of wilfully causing environmental damage at its UCG site near Chinchilla.
The trial is expected to run into April as more than 70 witnesses are expected to be called by the Crown.
In 2009, the State Government established a process for three companies, including Linc Energy, to trial UCG operations on a small scale in Queensland.
UCG involves converting coal to a synthetic gas by burning coal underground.
Linc Energy entered voluntary administration in 2016, a month after it was committed to face trial on the five charges in the District Court.
