October 24, 2017
Parents and friends packed into the Kingaroy Town Hall recently to salute the best and brightest students at Kingaroy State High School.
The special guest speaker was former KSHS pupil – now RAAF Flight Lieutenant – Oliver Kersnovski, who had flown in a day earlier on a C-27J Spartan military plane.
Oliver’s love affair with flying goes back a long way.
By the age of 17 – while he was still at school and enrolled in Aerospace Studies – he was already an accredited pilot.
He was also a part of the KSHS team that took part in the 2009 UAV Challenge at Kingaroy Airport.
Oliver was one of the main guests who handed out awards, joining Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington and Kingaroy Mayor Keith Campbell on the stage.
Before the main section of the awards began, Principal Ashley Roediger reflected on a year of achievement at the school.
The year began with the good news that 83 per cent of 2016 Year 12 students had achieved an OP1 to OP15, and 99 per cent had achieved their Queensland Certificate of Education.
2016 student Dylan Nichol achieved an OP1.
Another highlight for the school was the creation of a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) elective in Year 10, with the support of the University of Queensland and the Queensland University of Technology.
The sister school relationship with Fudooka High School was another success, with a group of Japanese students hosted in Kingaroy, and 19 Kingaroy State High School students going to Japan.
Clontarf Academy students also took part in a 19-day tour of central Australia, visiting Uluru, Kings Canyon and the Simpson Desert.
The KSHS Vocal Group, Symphonic Band and Stage Band provided musical interludes throughout the evening.
Always much anticipated at the Awards Night is the announcement of the new School Captains:
- Senior School Captains for 2018 will be Katelyn Beresford and Oscar Schmidt with Vice-Captains Sarah Tarlinton and Benn Reid.
- Junior School Captains for 2018 are Emily Mackay and Bailey Beresford, with Vice-Captains Kayley Collins, Flynn Woodall, Isabella McBride, Joey Reeve.
