An old South Burnett rugby league tradition is being revived next month with the staging of a Presentation Dinner to hand out season awards.

The dinner will be held from 6:00pm at Wondai Town Hall on Saturday, September 2.

“The South Burnett Rugby League is also pleased to announce that this will be the first formal gathering of the South Burnett Team of the Century, which was announced in 2008 comprising the best 17 South Burnett players and coach from 100 years of rugby league in Australia,” SBRL chairman Greg Pomfret said.

“The SBRL will be awarding numerous awards and recognition from across the ages, commencing with the Under 10 teams through to Under 18s, Ladies’ and Men’s South Burnett representatives.

“There will be a number of individual and team awards announced on the night.

“The teams will also be announced who will fight out the 2017 Grand Finals which will also be hosted in Wondai the following week.”

A guest speaker at the event will be Chris “Choppy” Close, former Queensland State of Origin and Australian player, who also played five years in the NSWRL with Manly-Warringah.

He is the son of long-time Murgon and Kingaroy residents Irma and the late Frank Close.

Also speaking will be Gold Coast Titans veteran Nathan Friend who retired at the end of the 2016 season after an NRL career which also included stints with the Broncos, Melbourne Storm and Warriors (see his amazing backflip which set up a try, below)

Tickets for the Presentation Dinner are available from all South Burnett rugby league clubs and from the South Burnett Rugby League Office, phone 0427-272-871.

Tickets are adults $40.00, 11-16 years $20.00 and Under 10s $15.00.
