The State Government has injected another $500,000 into Cherbourg’s recycling centre, the only facility of its type in the South Burnett.
State Development Minister Dr Anthony Lynham announced the Building Our Regions funding on Tuesday, and said it would take the State Government’s contribution to the plant to more than $1.48 million.
The recycling centre is the first in any indigenous community in the country.
It currently provides work for five local residents and Dr Lynham said the funds would increase this to seven full-time equivalent positions within the first year of operation.
“It’s great to see this facility continuing to expand in Cherbourg, helping the environment and supporting local jobs and training opportunities,” Dr Lynham said.
“Council is partnering with the State on the Stage 3 upgrade, contributing $10,000.
“The Stage 2 expansion will treble annual output and the latest upgrade will increase productivity from 1000 tonnes to 3000 tonnes, which will increase again to 3500.
“Infrastructure projects spark jobs growth and flow-on business opportunities, keeping regional Queensland’s local economies ticking over and its communities strong,” he said.
Building our Regions has also provided almost $500,000 to revitalise Cherbourg’s historical precinct. Work is due to start on this by October.
