Brass band music fans will be able to enjoy a special concert in Wondai this Sunday afternoon (June 18).

The Wondai Town and District Band will be teaming up with the Gold Coast City Brass Band to perform some of the world’s best music in a one-off “Best Of Brass” concert.

Last year the Wondai and District Brass Band were announced as the runners-up in the Concert Program section of the Queensland Brass Band Competition held at Nambour.

It was a remarkable achievement, given the band hadn’t taken part in the competition for the past 19 years.

The Gold Coast City Brass Band, for their part, have an ancestry even longer than the Wondai band.

They were formed in 1902 as the Nerang Town Band and have performed at Gold Coast events for the past 115 years.

They’ve also performed in New Zealand, Tasmania and Singapore, and at festivals in Stanthorpe, Warwick and Murwillumbah.

Sunday’s joint concert came about because one of the Wondai band’s players is related to one of the Gold Coast players.

This connection fostered an interest amongst Gold Coast band members to travel to the South Burnett, and the ultimate outcome will be a joint concert at the Wondai Diggers Club.

Both groups will get together in Wondai on Saturday for a rehearsal.

They’ll be assisted by Greg Aitken from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, who is coming to the region to help the two groups integrate.

The Sunday performance will begin at 1:30pm.

Entry is $10 for adults or $8 for concessions, but children will be admitted free.
