This year’s 100th Wondai Show will be officially opened on Saturday, September 2, by His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC, Governor of Queensland.
At least two Queensland Premiers and four Queensland Governors have opened the Wondai Show since it was first held in 1911, and the Governor’s appearance will continue a long vice-regal tradition.
Show Secretary, Noreen Brier, said on Thursday that the Society’s members are “thrilled” the Governor and his wife will be in attendance at this year’s show.
“This is a very special event both for the Show Society and the wider Wondai community, and having someone of the Governor’s stature as our special guest is really ‘the icing on the cake’.”
The first Wondai Show was held in May 1911 but owing to drought, depression and war, shows were not held in some years – hence 2017 is the actual 100th Show.
“This longevity is a testament to the enthusiasm, dedication, perseverance and sheer grit of Show Society members down through the years, and we are planning a big event to mark this momentous occasion,” Noreen said.
A Centenary Book has been compiled, tracing the history of the Society from its beginnings, with lots of anecdotes and stories from and about the many people involved over the years.
The Centenary Book will be on sale from the middle of June.
The Show Schedule should be available early July, but individual sections will be up on the Show Society’s website before then.
“We encourage everyone to have a look and consider entering something in the Show this year,” Noreen said.
“There are a number of Heritage/Centenary classes, with special Centenary Rosettes on offer for the winners.”
