The NRL’s Queensland Primary Schools Development Cup competition came to the South Burnett on Friday with young rugby league players from across the region gathering at Taabinga State School.
The round robin competition pitched teams from Nanango, Kingaroy, Taabinga, Wondai and Murgon State Schools and St Mary’s Catholic College against each other.
After a morning of games on multiple fields, Murgon State School and Kingaroy State School faced off in the final.
At half-time the score was Kingaroy 18, Murgon 14 but in the second half Murgon worked hard to cut back the deficit.
At full-time the scores were locked at 22-all.
However, Murgon was awarded the shield on a countback as they had scored first.
NRL Game Development Officer Mitchell Sargent said the Development Cup competition provided an opportunity for young players to experience competitive rugby league.
Murgon State School will now go on to play the winner of the Gympie schools round.
A State final will be played at the end of the year to determine the best primary school team in Queensland.
